4.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, 13 Jul 2003
By stefg (Ireland) - See all my reviews
This book is an excellent starting point for anyone using linux. I was a windows user up to recently, but now I've switched to linux and have found this book to be really helpful. It explains how to do the essential and basic things that can be baffling when you start.
I bought this book because I wanted to know more about doing tasks in the command line (shell) rather than GUI based applications because that's where I believe the power of linux lies for a developer. It provided me an excellent quick reference of how to do simple tasks (with clear examples) and saved me having to trawl less than user friendly web sites and tutorials (that often complicate what you want to do).
Althought this book is not a comprehensive guide, it covers enough to get you familar with linux so you can do the main things required by any user.
I think I will have this book for a long time as a reference and I am very happy with the book overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book to get you going., 10 April 2000
By A Customer
I was new to Unix a year ago and was looking for a book that showed me how to do the basics easily and quickly. This book does exactly that - it is task based and I still dip into it today when I need reminding. If you want to be a Unix geek then this is NOT the book for you. It IS what it says it is - a visual quickstart guide. Well recommended and at this price very good value.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
How can such a person write such rubbish. I was so disapointed at what the book had to offer. Just have a quick look at the online help and you can learn more in a second than you can in an hour with the book, I myself will never buy a quick start book again and I recomend you look at a different type of book.
